Introducing Jess

Hello, my name is Jess, I’m a 20-year-old PADI MSDT, originally from Norfolk.

I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors and I’ve always loved an adventure! In July 2017, I was very fortunate to be able to go to Madagascar for a few weeks as part of my studies. The trip was very conservation-minded. We spent a few weeks in the forest, helping scientists to collect data, and then the last week was spent camping on a beach and learning how to dive.

My first few breaths underwater were not the magical moment I had imagined – I panicked! I got out of the water holding back tears (something I now love to tell my students if they do not at first feel comfortable in the water). I told myself to face my fears and a few days later was certified as a PADI Open Water Diver! After getting used to the new sensation, I realised how amazing diving really is.

I took myself to Malta to complete my PADI Advanced Open Water certification a couple of months later and fell in love with the sport even more. It was here that I started thinking that maybe I could do this professionally. And that’s exactly what I did!

In September 2018, I completed my Divemaster course in Tenerife. I came back as soon as I could in January to complete my IDC, and I was a PADI Instructor by February 2019. The last year has been a whirlwind! I had an amazing opportunity to work for a Dive Centre who focused solely on training Divemaster’s (all the way from non-certified divers). This meant that I’ve been able to teach a whole variety of courses to lots of people, and I’ve loved every second!

I look back to where it all started in Madagascar, how terrified I was of the water, and I think of how far I have come in a relatively short space of time. My true passion in diving is to help others achieve this. The dream is to be able to make diving more accessible for everyone. I hope soon to be able to complete the Adaptive Techniques Instructor Specialty and be an advocate for mental health, and making diving a reality for those with disabilities.

I’m incredibly excited to start a brand-new adventure with Ollie and Tony at Sub Sea Adventures, continuing to pass on the knowledge that I have learnt, and learning loads more myself along the way!
